The path to creating a catalogue raisonné
with Navigating.art
Get everyone together
Regardless of who you’re writing your catalogue raisonné about, you’ll need support from the artist’s estate and any other institution holding a large portion of their work. Garnering their support at the beginning of the project will help the development process move smoothly.
Set up your digital tools
Don’t wait to set up your Navigating.art platform. Your digital tools will help shape what information you record and how it’s formatted from the beginning. Establishing your database and documentation processes now will create a smooth ongoing progress rather than creating unexpected work at the end.
Document while you research
Because you already set up your archive and catalogue database, you’re ready to use it while you research. Capturing information about artworks while the primary resources are in front of you saves time and ensures important information isn’t lost in an attempt to record information after the research phase.
Secure publishing rights
Making your catalogue raisonné available to the public encourages education and scholarship while connecting audiences with resources — just ensure you secure and document publication rights as you go. You can record rights information on the same page of a work in Navigating.art.
Review, review, review
Uncertainty is inevitable when dealing with historical information, but transparency is key. Note any uncertainty in your evidence on the Navigating.art platform, which lets you mark your editorial progress along the way until a record is completed.
Publish your catalogue raisonné
Congratulations! You’re ready to share your research with the globe. Click the publish buttons in the Navigating.art platform. You have control over what people see on the built-in online presentation by deciding what pieces of information remain for internal use only and what goes out to the world.
Update as research continues
Although you’ve published the digital catalogue raisonné, new resources and works might surface. Often the publication of a catalogue raisonné prompts contributions from unknown individuals and institutions. You can seamlessly update the catalogue raisonné with Navigating.art as new information arises without the struggles of reprinting.
Spread the word
Your digital catalogue raisonné is automatically and easily accessible to a global audience with the Navigating.art built-in online presentation. This availability makes it possible to share the work of your artist widely and protect their legacy for generations to come.
